Woke up at 5 something today after a weird dream where whatever I was was killing people. Or was me being killed? Anyways, the part that woke me up was hearing a little voice in my head that said ‘I don’t want to die’. I could not go back to sleep after that. I thought about it some and am thinking that it was my way of telling me to live life and have fun. I am scared shitless about dying and part of it could be because I feel like I have not done anything worthwhile with my life ( I can so see people reading this on my blog and thinking ‘what?!?! – what about when we/you did_______’. I have done a lot of great things with my life, but I am looking at the big picture. I want to change the world and this is what my adventure is all about.

On the way into school I dropped of the note card at the beauty salon. She wanted to know how to say ‘When will we see you here again†or something close to that. I had to go into school to work on my lessons so I did not stick around – I just gave the note to Cheryl to give to the student for Cheryl was sitting out front and was teaching that morning.

Woke up today and my throat was sore. When I talked at the table over breakfast my voice was sooooo low – probably dropped about an octave. I kind of like getting sick because my voice turns into Barry White and I love to feel the vibration in my chest. The down side is that I have to speak even louder due to my voice being lower. Oh well, can’t have everything.

I observed Katie’s lesson at the Beauty Salon this morning and she did a good job. Afterwards I went to school and started working on my lesson plan for Friday – specific food experience using simple past. I had to ask Matt what it meant to have a specific food experience just to clarify and he said that it is like I had rice and beans for dinner last night. This lesson is for the intermediate students which I have not taught yet so I was struggling with what they may or may not know already. I have been teaching the beginners and I know that they have very little to no prior knowledge which made it easy. I eventually was able to get a lesson together – the context is trying to choose what dessert to eat. I figure that they are familiar with regular meals but maybe not desserts. I am contemplating using rhubarb pie just for my dad although when the students ask what it is, I will have a hard time explaining to them that it is a red and green weed that the post office has marked as hazardous material. Background – my grandma’s sister lives in Sturgis, SD and sends rhubarb to her sister (my grandma) via mail. Apparently one time the box opened during delivery and then got marked as hazardous material. I think it is an appropriate distinction.

My class at 8am at the beauty salon went well today. Started off with a little panic for two extra people showed up for the class and the class is only supposed to be for the salon workers. Even Sarah, who was observing me, had no idea who they two where. Luckily, using my originals, I had enough handouts for everyone. Well, except for one exercise and Katie was nice enough to write out another copy while I was teaching. My context this morning was cost/price using how much and I used a beauty salon theme for I figured it would help them understand it better and it worked out well. I had very crude stick figure drawings to demonstrate hair cut, color, extensions, pedicure and such – we all had a nice laugh and for the most part they were able to figure it out. The only one that was hard for them was the hair cut but they eventually got it. I am going to go back in a couple days and ask how much a hair cut costs for I need to get my fro chopped down.

I went to the 8am class at the Beauty Salon to observe Natalie for these are the students that I will be teaching on Tuesday. Only 2 of the 4 showed up so it was a pretty small class and she did well. Afterwards I headed to school for my appointment to get my Tuesday lesson approved and the final write-up for today’s lesson approved. Yeah, not so much. I actually did pretty well on my Tuesday lesson so there were only a couple items that I had to clean up. Unfortunately, today’s lesson was not as good. It was close but still needed work. I finally got the damn thing approved around 1:30 and started busting my butt to get all of the materials ready for I did not start on them yet for the lesson was not approved yet. I drew a map of the Americas and most of Asia to use as the main aide in explaining where the countries that I am using are located. I had already practiced a couple times so it was not so bad – just had to draw it on a large piece of paper now. I then had to put together worksheets, dialogues and such. I finally finished around 4 which gave me about 20 minutes to prep. Yeah.

I have mentioned before about hot water in costa rica and that it can be a valued commodity. Below is a picture of the shower at my host home and how it heats the water. Instead of a water heater, there is a heating element on top of the shower head that heats the [...]

At breakfast I met our newest student, Leo, from Germany. He is in his 60s, retired and here to take the spanish immersion course. I told the others that Katie and I were going to the beach and Carsten was going to so we went together. Katie met up with us around 9 and we caught the 9:30 bus to Manuel Antonio for 110 colones (about 25 cents). While waiting at the bus terminal we saw Nahir and talked to her. She was waiting for her bus to go to San Jose and then wherever she has been staying for the past year. It was nice to see her again.

Woke up around 7:30 and my stomach was still bothering me. At breakfast I decided that it would be best for me to stay home instead of going to the beach/national park and try to do some hiking. So I went back to my room, finished my book and took a little siesta. Around noon Katie showed up and she was not feeling great. We went to a new soda shop and had lunch. Afterwards we went to an internet cafe and loaded my Boruca pictures and the rest of Katie’s pictures. While there I told Katie that I was getting a bug to see a movie and she was too so she tried to find the closest movie theatre. Turns out there is one in a hotel in Manuel Antonio – 46 seats. Apparently if we eat at their restaurant we get the movie for free. We are going to try to check it out sometime.
