Two years ago this month I was in China. Man, it seems just like yesterday and, yet, it also feels like ages ago.

The only reason why I bring this up is because after thinking about my trip I am, yet again, getting the urge to go back. This time I was thinking about taking a language immersion class and then do some traveling or maybe even find a job. I need to learn the language and this seems like a great way to do it. When I was in Costa Rica, some of the people that stayed in my homestay were taking language classes and they seemed to learn a lot.

I have looked a little into schools and there are plenty to choose from. I am mainly interested in going to one that is in a small city so I can experience the old China while it still lasts. I have not looked at the prices yet for I do not want to get my hopes crushed right away.

Someday…

Yesterday on npr’s marketplace, they had a story about the dating scene in China. They said that due to the young adults working so much, they have very little time for relationships, so parents and grandparents are stepping in to find a match. In Shanghai, hundreds of parents and grandparents gather in a park for ‘parents-matchmakers corner’. These parents are not arranging marriages, instead they ‘facilitate the process of their only children getting hitched and producing heirs’. There are also broker’s that are there representing lots of clients.

Right now there are more ladies then guys, so the guys can be picky about whom the shack up with. However, since more boys are being born right now, at some point the roles will reverse and the ladies will be able to pick and choose. So it looks like I am going at the right time! ;]

Tonight I was looking for jobs in Beijing for the summer olympics and somehow came across a set of videos from a jewish lady living in Beijing。 The videos have the theme of ‘sex in the city’ and she goes around the city asking questions like how do I find a boyfriend, what is your english name and why, what do you think of the men in beijing and so on. Since I just came back from china, a lot of it is funny to me and if you watch them, you will probably find them funny, too. I have found three episodes so far:

Lost in Translation

Country Loving – warning: there is a scene of a chicken being prepared for dinner

Friday was the last day for 3 people (Liang, Ana and I), so we went back to 1+1 to celebrate. This time we rented a vip room up on the 4th floor which included 4 large sofas, karaoke and our own bathroom (this was a major bonus). I do not remember how we were charged for the room – it took about 20 minutes to figure it all out – but I think the room was free, we just had to buy at least two expensive bottles of alcohol (we got a scotch/whiskey – never heard of this combination before). At the end of the night, the cost came to a little over $100 for everything, so I think it was well worth the money.

A big perk with the room was that we could go down stairs and dance and then come back up to relax and get away from the pounding music. Yes, I did go downstairs and pretend to dance. I even got up on a little stage a couple of times (thanks Asher!). The best part of dancing on the stage was watching a drunk guy fall off the stage while he was dancing.

I had a blast that evening and am would not have wanted to end my time in china any other way.

Last night I woke up at 2am again, but this time it was due to a wacked out dream. I was at a summer camp with about 20 others and a guy shows up that is somewhere between Jason and Freddy (horror movies) and his name was Bobby. I freaked out and started attacking him with a weed-wacker (no idea why I had a weed-wacker). Bobby then said ‘No, no, no. I got a tuition waiver and am here for the summer camp’. All the others were happy to see him and I just stared off in disbelief. This was when I woke up.

After these kind of dreams I try to stay awake awhile to distract myself because I just do not want to go back to sleep with this in my memory. I watched TV and then read my book. It took about 1.5 hours to go back to sleep, but at least I went back to sleep.

I blame this dream on Jason, Kim and Allison due to our discussions that night.

Yesterday, I looked into the TEFL certificate (teaching english as a foreign language) which would help me get a job if I wanted to teach english at a school. I just do not know if I should be teaching english given how poor I am at grammar.

Anyone have any other ideas on jobs that I can get in china?

Friday was my last day at La La Shou and at the end of the day, the staff and students gathered to say thank you to Alice and I. To say thank you, some of the kids showed off their talents by singing their name; singing a song about eyes, ears and nose; and doing sommersaults. We then took group pictures and Alice and I were presented with art that two of the older students drew for us.

I had a good time and I appreciate the time they spent to say thank you.

On Thursday a group of us went to a badminton court where some of the CCS staff taught us how to play. It was a lot of fun and the other players on the courts got a good laugh watching us. Oh, and the birdies we played with were made out of real feathers.

The highlight of the experience was definately Asher and his Team USA outfit. Short jean shorts with boxers hanging out the bottom, black shirt with USA stitched into it by him and last, but not least, a jean head band. I believe he found the right combination for the 2008 Team USA badminton jersey.

I attempted to play Alice and she kicked my butt. My excuse is that she played in high school and this was my first time. We played one game were we kept score and I was able to score a few points. We then just hit the birdie back and forth and it became very apparent that she was being nice to me in the game cause she started to kick my butt even more.

Oh well, at least I had fun.
