We have been attempting to grow veggies at our house. I got a tomato plant when I got my training for being a summer tree inspector with Friend of Trees. Steve got a bunch of seeds at PSU on Earth Day. I planted the tomato plant on our side yard next to the side of the house. Steve planted the seeds in little yogurt cups and kept them in a south window. Both have grown really well.
Last week, we created an upside down tomato planter out of 2L bottles for Steve’s tomato plants. It was really easy to make them and sooooo much cheaper then buying a topsy turvey. So far the tomato plants seem to be doing well in the planters and I get a lot of looks from people walking by the house and asking how they are doing. I do not know if they will grow any tomatoes this season for the plants have not flowered yet.
The tomato plant that I planted in the side yard really took off. I got quite a few flowers and had to get a support structure in anticipation for all of the tomatoes that were to come. The weather was in the high 90s last week so I watered the plant a couple times at a slow drip for about an hour to make sure it survived the heat. Coincidentally, I found water in the laundry room and called the landlord thinking that the washing machine drain pipe had a leak. Well, I was wrong. Apparently the basement walls are porous and the water from the tomato plant, which was planted against the side of the house, was coming through the wall. Whooops! Since there are no other sunny spots except next to the house, I had to give the plant to a co-worker. She better give me some of those tomatoes!
