Day 2 of Classes

Tuesday, 27 November

Did not sleep well again last night due to some wacked-out dreams just like last night. I am not sure, but they may have been the same dreams. I am thinking that I am just stressed about what is going on and it is effecting my dreams. It may be due to the heat in the room, but I do not think so.

Breakfast today was granola, yogurt and fruit. I do not know if I am going to be able to eat this much every day. It started to rain during breakfast and Meilady had an extra umbrella that I could borrow. Turns out Katie was waiting for me at the corner with a cab, so I did not half to walk up the hill in the rain. The class started with the first warm-up by Dorothy and Judy where we had to organize ourselves by the city we live in. Point of this is to get us comfortable for the lesson, bring up review topics, and/or prepare students for the next lesson. I am presenting a warm-up on Friday with Katie and Angela and we have no idea what we are doing yet.

Observations from Quepos

bathrooms are western style but Quepos does not have good plumbing so we cannot put TP down the toilet – just like China they love their fireworks here. They set them off throughout the night and where ever they want to (middle of street) there is no EPA and the car/bus exhaust really [...]

Lacking Pictures

I have only taken a few pictures and have not loaded them onto the web yet. I will try to start taking more and post them as soon as I have time.

First Day of Class

Monday, 26 November

For breakfast, Mileidy cut up fresh fruit and provided cereal. I told her that I do not like milk in my cereal and she gave me a ‘really’ look. She asked if I like toast and I said yes thinking that she would give it to me tomorrow, but instead she made it right away.

A group of us met up around 7:30 to walk to school. We were supposed to be at school by 8, but we did not get going until at least 8:30 when they loaded us into buses and we went up the hill to el aerio (or something like that). This place has a real c-130 type of cargo plane with part of the restaurant inside the plane and the rest around the plane. The place was on the top of a hill and overlooked the pacific – it was very beautiful and a shame that I did not have my camera. At the restaurant, we played the name game to get to know everyone and then we were given fruit and rolls. This was the first sighting of monkeys.

Meeting the Host Family

Sunday morning a group of us walked up the hill to find the school. On the way down we found a gym and checked it out. It looks like a lot of use are going to use it. We then checked out of the hostel and then walked around the city a bit. We ran into Dorothy and she joined us. At lunch, we met up with two more students that had just gotten into town. After lunch, we called our host families and then went our separate ways to meet them. My call to my family was bad for the mom does not speak spanish – luckily Angela was there and helped me out. I found out later that night that the school did not tell Meilady (the mom) that I was coming which explains why she was acting a little weird on the phone. When I showed up, Meilady and Rolindo were waiting outside and greeted me. I was sweating a lot due to the humidity and carrying all of my luggage. She joked that it was muy frio and this relaxed me a bit for she was laid back and joking.

Side note: I wrote an earlier post about my host family. A week before I left I was sent a note that that family was no longer available and was re-assigned to Meilady and Rolindo.

Getting to Quepos

Jason, Kim and the boys picked me up to go to dinner and then take me to the airport. On the way out of the door, I got a call from a realtor asking about viewing the house the next morning. It’s as if she knew I was leaving. It was just weird.

The airport was fairly empty which I was very surprised about considering it was thanksgiving weekend. I guess the day after thanksgiving at night is not so bad. I walked right up to the counter to check in and the security line only took about 10 minutes to get through.
