I visited my mom this weekend in tucson and helped her move a ceiling fan from the kitchen to the dinning room and install a new light fixture in the kitchen. Why is it that any kind of home improvement cannot be straight forward?
First, the screws for mounting the new light fixture were to small so a second trip to the store was needed. Secondly, the hole in the ceiling was an akward shape due to the ceiling fan (and the previous owners that installed it), so there was a little gap showing outside of the light fixture cap. We were able to push the fixture to one side enough that the hole was not noticable.
As for the dining room, the fixture involved removing an ugly light fixture (my mom says it is ugly, so it is ok for me to call it ugly) and installing the ceiling fan. When we took the light fixture off, we had the pleasant surprise of finding 4 sets of wires being connected in the fixture instead of just one for the light. It turns out one was for the light in the attic, one was for a plug in the living room, one was for the switch to the fixture, and well, I am not sure what the forth was for. Maybe it was the one that actually provided all of the power. Needless to say, the 4 wires made the installation that much more fun.
Anways, the point of the story. My mom made a comment while finishing the ceiling fan that I was really good at keeping track of all of the wires (4 sets + 3 wires in each = possibility for problems) and seemed to enjoy doing what I was doing. I thought about and agreed that I did like doing home improvement. I had thought about it in the past while working on my living room that it could be fun do home improvement for a living. Who knows, maybe sometday I will become a home improvement specialist in china. ;]
